Because most of its 12th-and 13th-century stained glass and sculpture survives, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chartres_Cathedral\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">Chartres Cathedral<\/span><\/a> is one of the most completely surviving medieval churches. The first Christian church was erected on that spot around 350 A.D. It was subsequently destroyed 5 times by fires and wars.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2014%20pics\/Chartres%20Apse%20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"410\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Its spiritual intensity is heightened by the fact that no direct light enters the building. It is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abelard.org\/france\/cathedrals11_chartres.php#intro\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">filtered through stained glass<\/span><\/a>, so that the whole experience of visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/d7a8\/e89b2d5fbec428ceb244d8bcfbfd1eed3f5d.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">this Cathedral<\/span><\/a> feels\u00a0out of this world&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2014%20pics\/Choir-of-Notre-Dame-de-Chartres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The interior of the cathedral is remarkable. The new walls, roof and choir were finished by 1221. <span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">In 1260<\/span> the building was completed and consecrated as one of the most compelling expressions of the strength and poetry of medieval men &amp; women.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ENpWwgRlZdw\" width=\"280\" height=\"155\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffd700;\"><span style=\"2px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>(time 30:30)<br \/>\nA major impulse of the Cosmic Christ began: 1250 AD<br \/>\nMen&#8217;s spirit felt impelled to express with the greatest possible precision<br \/>\nhow men&#8217;s heart &amp; mind can look upward<br \/>\nto the divine being beyond all existing hierarchies.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The city of Chartres owed its prosperity as a marketplace to its bishop, who <span style=\"color: #ffd700;\"><strong>combined the secular with the sacred<\/strong><\/span> by organizing <strong><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">four annual trade fairs<\/span><\/strong> on the four feasts of the Virgin Mary, to whom the cathedral was dedicated: Nativity, Annunciation, Purification and the Assumption. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2020-pics\/Veil-stained-glass.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\"><span style=\"2px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>Golden jeweled Reliquary donated by Pope Innocent III in 1214<br \/>\nto house a fragment of Mary&#8217;s-veil.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The choice was colored by the claim of the Cathedral to possess the robe that Mary wore when giving birth to Jesus. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2020-pics\/Mary-veil-sous-terre.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong style=\"color: #ffd700; font-family: Verdana; 2px;\">Another robe fragment was placed sous-terre,<br \/>\nin the Grotto, which has many chambers. It was<br \/>\nonce the most important Druidic sanctuary of Gaul,<br \/>\nwhich was later turned into the crypt of the cathedral.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2020-pics\/19th-century-reliquary-CC.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\"><span style=\"2px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>close-up<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">In Gallo-Roman times, when Gaul and Roman cultures merged, a temple to Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, was erected on top of the Druidic grotto.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; 6px;\">Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, the Earth-Mother, and Zeus, the Sky-Father. So, the Druidic Great Mother and Child became Persephone and Demeter before they once again changed their personas, in order to become Mary and Jesus, and Persephone became Our Lady Under the Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141123145145\/http:\/\/www3.nd.edu\/Departments\/Maritain\/etext\/hwp212.htm\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">Chartres cathedral school<\/span><\/a> had been the foremost center of learning many centuries before and after the 11th century. During that time, pilgrims did homage to Our Lady of the Underworld, the Black Virgin or <a href=\"http:\/\/interfaithmary.net\/blog\/chartres\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">black Madonna<\/span><\/a>, whose over 2000 years old Druidic statue represents a Virgin with a child on her knees, that stood in a crypt\/grotto now beneath the cathedral, next to an ancient well, whose water mixed with the <a href=\"?p=588\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">currents welling up<\/span><\/a> from deep inside the earth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The pilgrims drank that <span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">uniquely crystallized<\/span> water because it improved their health in many different ways. Its preservation in the 1194 fire, was regarded as miraculous.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2019-pics\/Greek-wisemen(1).jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"125\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2019-pics\/Cathedral-school-translating.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"125\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The didactic tone of the monks, in this foremost center of learning, studying the works of Plato, Aristotle, Euclides, Ptolemeus, was later specifically expressed by the builder-initiates in their designs and in the program selected for the creation of the glass and the sculptures, such as botanically accurate leaves and flowers. Religion and science achieved a harmonious balance in the service of God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Out of this, a vision unfolded of the role of the church in the world that was manifested by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_Innocent_III\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">Pope Innocent III<\/span><\/a> (1198-1216) who <a href=\"?p=997\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">re-established the temporal power of the papacy<\/span><\/a> to an all time height. Further donations for the glass and sculptures came from the nobility and gentry:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2013%20pics\/stained-glass-window-in-chartres-cathedral.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"366\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chartres-tourisme.com\/en\/do-not-miss\/the-cathedral\/events-in-the-chartres-cathedral\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">Chartres Cathedral<\/span><\/a> ranks as a triple masterpiece for its <a href=\"?p=3020\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">super-hard stone<\/span><\/a>, its <a href=\"?p=3023\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">cosmically proportioned<\/span><\/a> architecture, and sculptures, survivors of two major fires and numerous wars and revolutions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2013%20pics\/chartres%20blue.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"525\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; 6px;\">Its last narrow escape from total destruction occurred in 1836, when a fire destroyed the roof timbers and melted the lead. The timbers over the nave were replaced by <a href=\"?p=461\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">an iron structure<\/span><\/a> and then roofed over with copper. He is portrayed inside a vesica pisces -the portal to the new Jerusalem- on the geometric center-line of the entire edifice. Seated on a throne, he is holding the esoteric Book of Life, and surrounded by the symbols of the 4 Beasts in Rev 4:7, and Ezekiel 1:10, as well as Evangelists: a winged man for St. Matthew, a lion for St. Mark; a bull for St. Luke; and an eagle for St. John. The 60\u00b0 triangles representing the harmonic cosmos out of which he looks into our duality-based 90\u00b0 rectangles based world.
