This extended the construction time from 320 to 350 AD, because the site was a hill.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">New St. Peter&#8217;s Basilica over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/art-now-and-then.blogspot.com\/2017\/08\/old-st-peters-basilica.html\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">the old church<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u2248<strong style=\"color: #ffd700; 6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">1500 AD:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2024-pics\/3rd-church-1500+.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"153\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; 6px; text-align: left;\">The old <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Necropolis\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">necropolis<\/span><\/a> (carefully preserved) is some five meters below the floor of the present day basilica. The round building located next to the obelisk seems to predate the circus. It was a small 2 level structure of marble built into an older wall covered with red plaster. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2024-pics\/Shrine-Constantine-church.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">It stood in a courtyard, open to the sky, and accessible by narrow paths and steps down the slope and through the tombs. It was apparently a crowded place of pilgrimage.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2024-pics\/RomeStPetersReconstCamp_Shr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tropaion\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">Tropaion<\/span><\/a> was designed for the early Christian ritual of the celebratory meal at a martyr\u2019s grave; perhaps even for an early form of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eucharist\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">Eucharist<\/span><\/a>. The small slab in the floor of the shrine is at an askew angle to the shrine itself, perhaps reflecting the original orientation of the grave in the poor man\u2019s cemetery beneath the more affluent later tombs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2024-pics\/St-Ptr-shrine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"111\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The courtyard before the Tropaion was crowded with later burials. Numerous early Christian graves were found lying in a radial pattern around this central shrine. The shrine itself was rediscovered in excavations ordered by 20thC Pope Pius XII.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2024-pics\/Old-StPtr-Nero-circus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"6px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">On June 26, 1968, Pope Paul VI announced that the relics of Saint Peter had been discovered, as well as nearby graffiti of <a href=\"?p=1090\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">Saint Peter<\/span><\/a>&#8216;s name, claiming that he was buried there.
