They provide glimpses of lost late antique luxury gospel books and art of the 5th to 7th centuries, in the Aksumite kingdom of Ethiopia (350-650 AD) as well as in the Christian East. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2025-pics\/garima-gospels.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"156\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px; color: #ffd700;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">These unique works of Biblical art are written in Ethiopic, the ancient Semitic language of Abyssinia, and are composed of two distinct 10-inch-thick books, Garima 2 (the elder text) and Garima 1 (the younger text), written on goat skin and embellished with colorful drawings:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2025-pics\/Garima-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"6px; color: #ffd700;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The Gospels are housed in Ethiopia&#8217;s <a style=\"color: #ffd700;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abba_Garima_Monastery\">Abba Garima Monastery<\/a>. They are not known ever to have left the monastery.
