Short-Term and Long-Term memory are built by two entirely separate “machinery”.

A single pulse of signaling chemical produced a change that faded. It took four or more pulses separated in time to switch on the gene program that grows new physical connections between cells. Spacing was the ingredient—not effort, not intensity, not one heroic afternoon.

Your brain reads any repeated signal as important, and a single hard blast as noise. It builds structure only for the first one.

The purpose of encoding is to assign a meaning to the information to be memorized. You might encode the word ‘lemon’ as a round, yellow, fruit. If you could not recall the word “lemon” spontaneously, then invoking one of the three encoded indexes should help you to retrieve it.

The effectiveness of this method depends on the depth of encoding and method of organization in your memory. The process of encoding refers not only to memorization, but also to its environmental, cognitive, and emotional context.

The use of mnemonic devices for linking ideas with images may assist in this process, although it can still be forgotten.

Storage can be seen as the active process of consolidation that makes memories less vulnerable to being forgotten. Consolidation differentiates memories of recent information from memories of older ones. Sleep, and in particular the (REM) Rapid-Eye-Movement phase of sleep, along with data reviewing plays a large role in consolidation.

One way to increase the storage capacity of short-term memory might be to increase the size of the info through a more effective encoding strategy, such as grouping, or organizing it in a more logical pattern.

Four things measurably change as a brain ages:

Low-grade inflammation builds up around neurons.

Myelin insulation on nerve fibers thins, so signals slow and misfire.

BDNF (the growth factor that behaves like fertilizer for neurons) falls off.

Blood flow drops in specific memory regions.

All four respond to inputs you control. That is the entire case for doing any exercise to improve memory.

The earlier idea was more oxygen, better thinking. Then Lactate showed up. The stuff that burns in your legs, long filed under “waste product”, crosses the blood-brain barrier, activates an enzyme called SIRT1 in the hippocampus, and switches on BDNF production. When researchers blocked lactate from entering the brain, memory improvement disappeared.

Thus leg-exercises are the key. Your legs are manufacturing a chemical message and sending it up. You only make a meaningful amount when you push hard enough to feel it. A pleasant stroll is not enough.

The hippocampus grows by about 2% over a year, after doing regular aerobic training, when it normally shrinks. 2% means roughly 1–2 years of aging reversal.

What to do:

2–3 times per week, get honestly out of breath in short bursts.

20–30 seconds hard, then 1–2 minutes easy, repeated 6–8 times.

Modalities: stairs, stationary bike, a hill.

The test: Can you hold a conversation during the hard part? If yes, you’re not making much lactate.

You should want the rest interval, not merely accept it.

The easy minutes let you produce a real effort on round 6 instead of 8 mediocre ones.

Do this in the morning, because adrenaline can cost sleep, and sleep is another lever.

If your knees object, a stationary bike or pool removes impact while keeping the effort.

Memory lives in the synapse, the junction between two cells.
