Historically, radiance is called &#8220;intensity&#8221; and spectral radiance is called &#8220;specific intensity&#8221;. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"6px;\">Radiance is useful because it indicates how much of the power emitted, reflected, transmitted or received by a surface will be received by an <a href=\"?p=203\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">optical<\/span><\/a> system looking at that surface from a certain view angle. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"6px;\">Spectral radiance expresses radiance as a function of frequency or wavelength. Radiance is the integral of the spectral radiance of all frequencies\/wavelengths. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"6px;\">For radiation emitted by an ideal black body at a given temperature, spectral radiance is governed by Planck&#8217;s law, while the integral of radiance over the hemisphere into which it radiates, is governed by the Stefan\u2013Boltzmann law. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/userfiles\/image\/2014%20pics\/Hyper%20spectral%20imaging.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"177\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"6px;\">Hyperspectral imaging collects and processes data from across the EM spectrum. Its goal is to obtain the spectrum for each pixel in the image of a scene, with the purpose of finding objects, identifying materials, or detecting processes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"6px;\">The human eye sees visible light in three bands (red, green &amp; blue). Spectral imaging divides the spectrum into many more bands. This technique of dividing images into bands can be extended beyond the visible. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"6px;\">In hyperspectral imaging, the recorded spectra have a fine wavelength resolution and cover a wide range of wavelengths.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xdLVT3_0c0c\" width=\"280\" height=\"155\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"6px;\">Hyperspectral sensors use almost the entire EM spectrum. Objects leave unique &#8216;prints&#8217; in the EM spectrum. These &#8216;<a href=\"?p=638\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">spectral signatures<\/span><\/a>&#8216; or &#8216;fingerprints&#8217; enable identification of the materials that make up a scanned object.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"6px;\">Hyperspectral sensors and processing systems are used in surveillance, <span style=\"font-family: Verdana; 6px;\"><a href=\"?p=803\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">physics<\/span><\/a><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; 6px;\"><a href=\"?p=839\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">astronomy<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">, agriculture, <\/span><a href=\"?p=820\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"color: #ffd700;\">biomedical<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"> imaging, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"6px;\">and geosciences.
