Ionic Bonds?
Ionic bonds arise from elements with an almost empty outer shell acting with elements with an almost full outer shell. A complete transfer of electrons takes place.
A well known example is table salt, sodium chloride. In order to become stable, sodium gives its one outer shell electron to chlorine which needs only one electron to fill its outer shell, and become stable.
As a result, the number of sodium’s protons exceeds the number of its electrons, thus giving it a positive charge. Also, the number of chlorine’s protons becomes fewer than its electrons, giving it a negative charge.
The attraction between these atoms is like static electricity where opposites attract.
