Neuro-Transmitters

Key Neurotransmitters at work

Acetylcholine is an excitatory neurotransmitter because it generally makes cells more excitable. It governs muscle contractions and causes glands to secrete hormones. In Alzheimer’s there is a shortage of acetylcholine.

GABA (gamma-amino-butyric acid) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter because it tends to make cells less excitable. It helps control muscle and vision activities.

Serotonin is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that constricts blood vessels, brings on sleep, and controls temperature. It regulates moods and processes sights and sounds. Thus, drugs like LSD and Ecstasy target serotonin receptors.

Dopamine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter involved in mood and control of complex movements. Most behavioral disorders medications modify dopamine’s actions.

When the brain is healthy, it functions automatically. When problems occur, results can be devastating. One in 5 people suffer from damage to their nervous system.
