The R-brain is the oldest and most primitive part of our brain. It is known as the ‘Reptilian system’ because it makes up the entire brain in reptiles. Its main components are called the brain-stem and cerebellum.

The brainstem is located right above the spinal cord, and comprises of the midbrain, pons, and medulla. Its thick bundle of nerve fibers acts as a relay station and major pathway for motor and sensory information between the body + other 2 brain sections.

It controls hearing, taste, eye movement, blood circulation, blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, coughing, vomiting, swallowing, digestion, bladder control, wakefulness, attention, arousal, facial expressions and sensations, demeanor, sleep, and other essential autonomous brain functions.

It also controls the execution of the “fight, flight, or freeze” response to signals of distress from the senses.

The cerebellum contains more nerve cells than the rest of the brain combined. It acts as the brain’s super computer.

It automates movement sequences and orchestrates the equilibrium of the skeletal muscular system.

It regulates optimal mental dexterity, and processes and distributes information to and from other brain parts.
