MFB + PVS
Aversive stimuli that provoke action responses activate the brain’s punishment (pain) circuit which enables us to cope with unpleasant situations.
It includes brain structures, such as the hypothalamus, thalamus, amygdala, hippocampus, and insular cortex.
The Peri-Ventricular System (PVS) or punishment circuit, functions by means of acetylcholine, which stimulates the secretion of adrenal cortico-trophic hormone (ACTH). ACTH in turn stimulates the adrenal glands to release adrenalin to prepare the body’s organs for Action.
Stimulating the punishment circuit can inhibit the reward circuit. Thus, fear of pain can drive out pleasures!
The MFB and PVS are the big systems of motivation. They encourage people to behave so as to suppress their instinctive impulses and avoid painful experiences!
